ABOUT CHILDREN'S DENTISTRY
~
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”
How well this proverb applies to children’s oral health! As soon as your baby’s teeth begin to show, it’s important to start paying attention to their oral hygiene and how their mouth structure is developing. At around the 18month mark, it would be prudent to get into some positive dental habits for your kids by brushing their teeth twice a day and flossing. At this young age, regular dental check-ups are not required, but it definitely is beneficial for them to be familiarise with the environment and/or the idea of a dental appointment.
At the Dentist, we encourage you to bring your young child along to your 6-monthly dental check up appointments. During this time, one of our friendly dentists would usually let your child have a little “ride” in the chair to encourage a positive association with the dentist. As your child grows into a toddler, we can begin to schedule an appointment for your child with one of our dentists. During your child’s visit, our dentists will:
1. Look at your child’s face and jaws for signs of mal-alignment;
2. Try to look at any teeth that are through to make sure they are healthy;
3. Instruct you (as the parent/guardian) on fluoride, diet, brushing and general oral health tips.
When your child becomes more independent and is able to brush his/her teeth without supervision, regular hygiene appointments is encouraged. During these appointments we will routinely to assess the development of your child’s teeth and jaw, and if orthodontic treatment is necessary. We counsel older children on habits such as drinking sugary drinks, nail-biting, thumb-sucking etc. can adversely impact oral health. We will also provide preventative treatment which includes a thorough clean, polish and fluoride treatment.
